The Kearny Mesa Lunar New Year Festival 2012 @ SEARS is a 3-day cultural and charitable
community event whose mission is to promote the Asian cultural heritage during an
important traditional holiday.
The Lunar New Year is celebrated in many Asian communities, particularly those whose
countries and territories have significant Chinese populations, such as Mainland China, Hong
Kong, Indonesia, Tibet, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and also
in Chinatowns elsewhere. Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and
has had influence on the new year celebrations of its geographic neighbors, as well as cultures
with whom the Chinese have had extensive interaction. These include Koreans (Seollal), and
Bhutanese (Losar), Mongolians (Tsagaan Sar), Vietnamese (Tết), and the Japanese before 1873
(Oshogatsu).

Economic growth in and around Clairemont Mesa/Kearny Mesa
After the recent economic slump, we are experiencing the beginning of growth.
According to the 2010 Census, Asians make up 14.5% of the population in Kearny Mesa and
the immediate surrounding communities of Serra Mesa, Tierrasanta, and Linda Vista. Overall,
Asians in San Diego number over 200,000, making up 15.5% of the total population. With a net
growth of 51.8%, it is the fastest growing ethnic group in all of San Diego.
Thus, the Kearny Mesa Lunar New Year Festival 2012 is the perfect starting point to celebrate
the beginning of economic growth for the community in Clairemont Mesa/Kearny Mesa as well
as for the greater San Diego regions.
